From our office

Parentkind is a charity (turnover c.£1.5m) which represents over 12,500 Parent Teacher Associations across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. These PTAs are supported to raise a staggering £122 million per year for their schools (£80 million during Covid) and the charity has huge ambitions to grow the number of PTAs across the UK and support them to collectively raise a quarter of a billion to directly impact the young people in their schools.

The charity is the representative voice of parents, guardians and carers with educational responsibility and has been a go-to source for government and other key educational stakeholders, including during the Covid-19 pandemic where we collated and represented parents’ views on diverse topics such as mask-wearing in school and pupils sitting exams.

We champion the role of those with parental responsibility in their child’s education through our research and by influencing senior education policymakers and legislators such as MPs, education unions and government officials. The Covid-19 pandemic has had a measurable impact on our children and young people and their education. It has also changed the relationships between schools and homes. Moving forward, Parentkind is uniquely positioned to represent the voice of parents and carers at local, national and government level.

While the turnover of the charity is lean at the centre, the impact of the charity is significantly large, and our work ensures parent and carer voices are heard at a local, regional, and national level. The evidence is clear that parental participation in education benefits children in schools and society as a whole and increases the opportunities for social mobility for our younger generations.

The Trustees and the Parentkind team have collaborated to create a new strategy with a focus on our four strategic pillars – Growth, Inclusivity, Credibility and Collaboration.

Parentkind currently supports 12,500 PTAs in schools. Our ambition is to increase this number significantly and to work in partnership to ensure parental participation is fully diverse and inclusive. We will actively ensure that schools in under-represented communities are part of our membership and have access to third-party funding. We want to ensure we are active across all geographical areas in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and that our support and communications are inclusive and resonate with all who have parental responsibility.

During the last two years, we have been more active than ever in the media and have built a reputation as a credible voice within the Department for Education and equivalents across the nation.

We now want to build on this to be a thought leader; gathering compelling research and ensuring we spread our message of parental participation and its benefits.

We will also continue to empower PTAs to promote their positive outcomes and inspire parents and educators locally and nationally.

As we enter an exciting phase of Parentkind’s history, we are looking to appoint a new Treasurer to chair our Money & Risk sub-committee and two new Trustees to come on board.

In particular:

For the Treasurer, we are looking for a financially qualified professional with an understanding of the charity sector.

For our new Trustees, given we are looking to grow our membership we are keen to have a membership professional who has experience in growing, retaining, engaging, and motivating membership.

In line with our new strategy, we are looking for one of our new Trustees to bring experience in policy influencing and public relations to help us ensure the voice of those with a parenting role is heard.

We provide training and support and encourage first-time Trustees to apply. We value inclusivity and actively encourage people from all backgrounds and cultures to apply.

We have four main board meetings a year held in central London, and three sub-committees (People & Governance, Impact and Money & Risk), Trustees are expected to serve on one subcommittee. We have an annual strategy away day once a year. Currently, we are moving toward having our sub-committees take place on the same day as the board meetings.
