From our office

Age UK Kensington & Chelsea (£2.9 million) is a community-based charity working in the heart of Kensington & Chelsea to ensure that older people’s voices are heard, their needs are met, and their independence is supported. We are a team of 95 staff who provide a wide range of services including advice & information, and a variety of activities which improves wellbeing and address the issues of loneliness and isolation among older people. Our services range from informal social and leisure activities through to more practical assistance, social prescribing and in light of the pandemic, delivering large scale humanitarian response from the first day of lockdown in 2020. We are part of the fabric of Kensington & Chelsea – a diverse and vibrant borough with need and demand for more services and innovation for older people.

As the UK was affected by the global pandemic, we were extremely concerned about the impact on older people and so we were ready to deliver our response from the first day of lockdown and it meant we were able to support over 1000 isolated older people across Kensington and Chelsea every week for over four months. We supported people with weekly care packages, fresh meals, basic supplies, keeping in touch calls, remote information and advice and bespoke activity packs for older people living with dementia. Alongside transport to and from vaccination sites, it was a concerning time but one which we look back on with great respect and admiration for our community, our volunteers, our service users, staff, board, and partners.

Prior to the pandemic, we introduced in partnership with the NHS, My Care, My Way which has continued to grow from strength to strength with over 40 Health and Social Care Assistants working with over 7,000 patients with support to reduce hospital admissions and promote independence. Every NHS registered GP practice in Kensington & Chelsea is now signed up to My Care, My Way.

We also established our own trading arm “Age United” which works with Social Prescribing Link Workers across Kensington and Chelsea who support those aged 18-65 which enables us to support more people and we work closely with the council, CCG and Primary Care Network to deliver this project and grow our reach and impact.

More people are living longer lives and as an organisation we need to be fit for the years to come and ready to deliver the services our older people tell us they need. We are developing innovative new offers such as our upcoming pilot to deliver an evidence based long term supportive intervention for people living with Dementia and exploring how exciting developments in technology can best support people as they age.

It is an exciting time to join our board as we have appointed our new Chair, Bob Empson earlier this year and we are currently beginning to create a new three-year strategy. We appointed a number of new trustees to the board during the pandemic with skills in fundraising, communications, marketing and leadership. As our current Treasurer, Ian Hill is stepping down, we are looking to appoint a new Treasurer.

We are keen that our board represents the diversity of our borough and we encourage applications from people from diverse backgrounds and experiences including LGBTQIA+, disabled and people from ethnic minority backgrounds. We are looking for a professional with a recognised accountancy qualification, who can champion our organisation, who is strategic and can offer support and challenge to our board and executive team.

We are a values driven charity and older people are at the heart of everything we do in our community, we are looking for someone who is committed and dedicated to supporting older people. We are looking for a Treasurer passionate about our borough and the impact our charity achieves every day.

The board meets four times a year in the evening for c. three hours and we have two main sub committees, the Finance and Risk committee and our Quality, Performance & Development committee; both meet quarterly for c. two hours. Our new Treasurer will chair the Finance and Risk committee. Our Trading Arm, Age United meets for around an hour quarterly. We hold an annual AGM and also meet annually for a board development/strategy review day and other ad hoc events throughout the year. We expect the time commitment for Treasurer to be approximately 1-2 days per month.
