Role Summary:

  • Maintain an overview of Bromley Mencap's affairs
  • Contribute to the charity’s strategic management and policy setting
  • Ensure Bromley Mencap’s financial viability and integrity

General responsibilities:

All trustees, including the Treasurer, are bound by core responsibilities, which can be summarised as follows:

  • To ensure that Bromley Mencap complies with its Memorandum and Articles of Association, charity law, company law, pensions law, employment law and any other relevant legislation or regulations
  • To ensure Bromley Mencap applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its Objects as defined in its governing document
  • To contribute actively to the Board of Trustees' role in giving firm strategic direction to Bromley Mencap, setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets
  • To safeguard the good name and values of Bromley Mencap
  • To ensure the financial stability and efficient administration of Bromley Mencap
  • To protect and manage the property of the charity and to ensure the proper investment of the charity's funds.

In addition to the above statutory duties, each trustee should use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the Board of Trustees reach sound decisions.

Specific duties of the Treasurer

Paid staff are responsible for the day to day financial running and management of the charity. The Treasurer fulfils their statutory responsibilities by:

  • Providing support and professional guidance to the Finance Manager
  • Chairing the Finance and General Purposes Sub-committee (F&GP) which reviews and makes recommendations to the Board of Trustees on :
    • Budgets and financial reporting
    • Statutory accounts and audit
    • Cash management, investments and reserves
    • Accounting policies and procedures
    • Insurance
  • Keeping the Board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities
  • Making a presentation of the accounts at the Annual General Meeting



  • Willingness to devote the necessary time and effort
  • Good, independent judgement
  • Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship
  • Be guided by Nolan's seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership
  • Financial qualifications and experience – some knowledge of charity finance is desirable but not essential
