We are a craft organisation based in Havant, Hampshire, with impact across the UK.
We literally make space for people and organisations involved in craft, whether physically in our own building or digitally in our virtual networks and events.
Raising the profile of craft in all its forms, we work with local and national arts organisations, contributing to debate, supporting makers and providing opportunities.
As the lead craft organisation in Hampshire, Making Space initiates opportunities for new networks and partnership. This includes working with local arts organisations and contributing to regional and national development around craft and community engagement. Our specially tailored projects inspire, challenge, skill-up, engage and build new audiences for the sector.
Making Space is all about excellence in contemporary craft, design and the visual arts. We support makers, creating opportunities for people to develop design and making skills. We believe that being involved in high-quality craft increases people’s wellbeing.
From our purpose-built studios in Leigh Park, we deliver courses, masterclasses and projects through which children, young people and adults can learn from skilled and experienced makers. It houses seven individual studio spaces that are leased to professional makers producing high quality work, as well as two fully equipped workshops that are available for hire, either as creative spaces or for business meetings.
We are an organisation of contrasts, where high-quality craftspeople create beautiful things from contemporary studios alongside local people experiencing craft for the first time.

We are seeking a Chair who will act as an ambassador for Making Space, develop relationships with key stakeholders, provide leadership to Making Space and its Board; oversee the forward planning to ensure maximum impact for members and the sector; and  will operate within our charitable objectives.

The Chair will support Making Space to implement a fundraising strategy to create new revenue streams beyond our existing local authority, supportive trusts and foundations, to become more agile, responsive and sustainable.

The Chair will have experience as a charity trustee, working in small organisations, have credibility with decision-makers and will bring their networks to the benefit of Making Space.  Making Space values and cares passionately about the diversity its staff, trustees and makers. Our board should reflect our diverse sector in order to ensure our network has leadership that draws fully on the different skills and perspectives our country has to offer.

Applications are encouraged from candidates from across the UK, regardless of sex, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, age, religion or belief, and from the broadest range of personal and professional backgrounds. We particularly welcome applications from those from a black or ethnic minority background and people living with a disability.

To discuss this opportunity further please contact Faye Hughes, Director of Making Space  director@makingspace.org

The outgoing Chair, Lesley Butterworth, would also be happy to speak to prospective candidates. Please contact chair@makingspace.org

To apply, please submit your CV and covering letter addressing the person specification to  director@makingspace.org
