Sussex Pathways is a criminal justice charity based in Lewes, East Sussex. We work within prisons and communities with the aim of reducing offending behaviours and empowering ex-offenders to make positive life choices. Our team is comprised of staff, trustees, and volunteers. We work with offenders and victims of crime primarily within Sussex, but are able to facilitate out of area work when capacity allows.

We received the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service in June 2021.

The charity's growth results from increasing demand to provide support for prison leavers who are returning to Sussex from HMP Lewes and other local prisons, from consequences of the newly reformed national rehabilitation environment, and from the increasing importance of Sussex Pathways to the high profile Restorative Justice programme of the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner.

Sussex Pathways has achieved recent success with new funding streams, and is planning to add a further programme to support prison leavers from women’s' prisons. Additionally the board is working with the CEO on mapping out ambitious five year growth plans.

At the same time, the board is part way through a succession planning programme as some of the original founders of the charity retire.

The growth in funding, cost base and organisational complexity has obvious implications for the support functions. The existing management focus on month by month cash flow needs to be enhanced by stronger processes for budgeting and management accounts to provide clearer guidance to management and better visibility for the Board. It could also be a good time to consider reviewing the day to day processes of book-keeping, PAYE etc with a view to future-proofing financial administration for a growing organisation.

We anticipate the Treasurer joining the board of trustees. Board members attend five meetings a year, one of which includes the Annual General Meeting. In addition, they contribute in specific ways, according to their expertise and availability, to the overall management of the charity, taking part in subcommittees or projects in accordance with the needs of the charity.

The current Treasurer works with the charity's Administration Manager to monitor the cash position and prepare cash flow projections in advance of board meetings. He is responsible for working with the accountant and independent examiner on submission of the charity's annual financial accounts.

The Board would be looking for the newly appointed Treasurer to take a lead in making recommendations to meet the needs for current and future financial management, and working on implementation with the CEO, with support of the Chair and other members of the Board.
