MumsAid is an award-winning charity providing pregnant women and new mums with counselling and therapeutic support for emotional or mental health difficulties, including specialist services for teenage mothers and mothers of babies with disabilities and special needs. Our vision is of a society where all mothers are supported with giving their babies the best start in life.

We are currently looking for a new treasurer to join our board of trustees. The board meets approximately every six weeks (usually online, with occasional in-person meetings in London) and plays a crucial role in overseeing and supporting MumsAid's work. The treasurer would also sit on the board's finance sub-group, which meets regularly ahead of every board meeting.

The overall role of a treasurer is to maintain an overview of the organisation’s affairs, ensure its financial viability and ensure that proper financial records and procedures are maintained. In addition to the general responsibilities of a charity trustee, duties of the treasurer include:

  • Overseeing, approving and presenting budgets, accounts and financial statements
  • Being assured that MumsAid’s financial resources meet its present and future needs
  • Ensuring that the charity has an appropriate reserves policy
  • Working with the finance officer to prepare and present financial reports to the board
  • Ensuring that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place
  • Liaising with staff and volunteers about financial matters as appropriate
  • Advising on the financial implications of the organisation’s strategic plans
  • Ensuring that the accounts are prepared and disclosed in the form required by funders and the Charity Commission
  • Ensuring that the accounts are scrutinised in the manner required (independent examination or audit) and any recommendations are implemented
  • Keeping the board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities
  • Contributing to the fundraising strategy of the organisation
  • Working with the finance officer to produce budgets for fundraising applications
  • Supporting and mentoring the finance officer
  • Regularly attending and contributing to the finance and fundraising sub-committee of the board
  • Sitting on appraisal, recruitment and disciplinary panels as required
  • Acting, where required, as a counter signatory on cheques, grant applications, etc.

Person specification:
In addition to the person specification for a trustee, the treasurer should have the following qualities.

  • Financial qualifications and experience
  • Some experience of charity finance, fundraising and pension schemes
  • The skills to analyse proposals and examine their financial consequences
  • Being prepared to make unpopular recommendations to the board when necessary
  • A willingness to be available to staff for advice and enquiries on an ad hoc basis

The treasurer would need to be able to volunteer a minimum of 6-8 hours of their time per month, including regular attendance at board and finance sub-group meetings.
