Who we are

Barnwood is an independent charitable Trust that has been working across Gloucestershire since the nineteenth century. We love being an integral part of the life of this county, acting as an agent of social change, working alongside disabled people and people with mental health challenges to change conditions impacting on them, using the Trust’s significant resources to support that change.

The Trust’s vision is to make Gloucestershire a better place for disabled people and people with mental health challenges. Our quest, which we pursue with passion, is for Gloucestershire to be a place where everyone with a disability or mental health challenge is valued for who they are and what they can give, can do the things they love, and feel fully welcome and at home in their communities.

We are seeking to appoint up to 3 Trustees in 2022 to join our Board in guiding Barnwood Trust’s work. Trustees are volunteers from all walks of life, who are legally responsible for ensuring the charity is well run, solvent and able to meets its aims and purpose.

A 200-year-old charity, Barnwood works alongside disabled people and people with mental health challenges to make the county a more inclusive place to live with more opportunities. We support thousands of people every year and we are a financially independent organisation that doesn’t rely on fundraising. As a Trustee, you will play a vital role in pushing our work forward. Our Board is inclusive, welcoming, and committed to continuous improvement. Previous board experience is not essential, and we can help you take an active role by removing any barriers to participation.

Becoming a Trustee is a serious commitment but it is also intensely rewarding and gives you the opportunity to gain strategic experience and learn new skills.

We are seeking new Trustees who have a wide range of life experiences: direct lived experience of disability and mental health challenges and what it means to rely on government benefits, people of colour, people who are LGBTQI+, young people, and people from all parts of the county. Whatever your background, we would love to hear from you.

Applications will be particularly welcome from people with any of the following experience:

  • Living with disability and/or mental health challenges
  • Experience of the benefits system for disabled people
  • Financial investment management
