About The Sleep Charity

The Sleep Charity is a small, multi-award-winning national organisation based in Doncaster. We are on a mission to empower the nation to sleep better. In 2020 the charity was awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a charity can be given.

Our work has a growing reputation for excellent in the field of sleep support and a strong evidence-base. We have an advisory board, known as ‘The Sleep Council’ who provide a link between national experts in the field and our Trustee Board. 

 

What will you be doing?

The charity has grown considerably over the last 3 years, launching a national helpline, receiving the Queen’s Award and merging with The Sleep Council.

The organisation is unique in that it is the only charity offering support for national sleep issues from cradle to grave.

The Sleep Charity is at a pivotal moment in its strategic development, and we seek a Chair to lead our ambitious organisation through its next phase.

Knowledge of the voluntary sector is essential as is the commitment of the Chair to our values and vision.

We also seek an individual with the ability to raise awareness of and gain support for the organisation with new audiences and benefactors.

 

What are we looking for?

We are seeking a committed individual who has a broad knowledge and understanding of the charity sector and issues affecting it.  You will need strong leadership skills and the ability to work with a range of people. Good understanding of charity governance is essential. 

A commitment to our values and a strong, visible passion for our work is vital. Strong networking capabilities are important and the ability to foster a team culture. 

In addition to the qualities required of a Trustee of the charity, the Chair must also meet the following requirements:

Personal Qualities

  • Demonstrate a strong and visible passion and commitment to the charity, its strategic objectives and cause Personal gravitas to lead a significant national organisation Exhibit strong inter-personal and relationship building abilities and be comfortable in an ambassadorial role Demonstrate tact and diplomacy, with the ability to listen and engage effectively Strong networking capabilities that can be utilised for the benefit of the charity Ability to foster and promote a collaborative team environment Ability to commit time to conduct the role well, including travel and attending events out of office hours

Experience

  • Experience of operating at a senior strategic leadership level within an organisation Successful track record of achievement through their career Experience of charity governance and working with or as part of a Board of Trustees Experience of external representation, delivering presentations and managing stakeholders Significant experience of chairing meetings and events

Knowledge and Skills

  • Broad knowledge and understanding of the charity sector and current issues affecting it Strong leadership skills, ability to motivate staff and volunteers and bring people together Financial management expertise and a broad understanding of charity finance issues Good understanding of charity governance issues

As Chair of our board you will play a pivotal role in shaping our strategic direction and supporting our work to continue to grow.  There is a real opportunity to use your leadership skills creatively to support the organisational development of this small charity. 

This is a key role in our organisation and will ensure we continue to build on our excellent work and reputation, extending our support to reach more beneficiaries year on year with evidence based sleep support. 

 

Commitment:

This role requires a significant time commitment of at least 4 days per month.

Quarterly meetings are held in Doncaster.

This role is flexible and can be done mainly at home or mainly at the office.
