In addition to general duties and responsibilities as a Lay Member of Chapter, the Treasurer oversees the financial governance of the Cathedral. The Treasurer will have experience and expertise in financial accountability, management and sustainability, and will hold a professional qualification in accounting, with supporting evidence of commercial or charitable experience at Board level.
The Treasurer will, on behalf of Chapter, work closely with the Chief Operating Officer and Head of Finance/Chief Financial Officer on all matters relating to finance and ensure that:
- the annual financial statements are prepared for external audit and for publication annual budgets are prepared with appropriate income & cost allocation, and that actual results against budget are monitored frequently and regularly
- VAT and other taxation is properly recorded and reported to HMRC
- the Cathedral has sufficient working capital to continue its operations
- the risk register is kept up-to-date and is reviewed by the Finance Committee on a regular basis and reported to Chapter
This is a three-year appointment in the first instance. The Chapter Treasurer may serve for a maximum of three periods of three years. In addition to the time commitment as a Lay Chapter Member, the Treasurer will be required to Chair four Finance Committee meetings a year which last 2.5 hours each. The Treasurer is also likely to spend an average of around 5 hours a week on financial and matters relating to the Cathedral, the time varying with the demands of the financial cycle.
