Job Details

Do you want to be a part of an organisation that is passionate about supporting survivors on their path to freedom from Domestic Abuse?

At I Choose Freedom not only do we support survivors living in refuge we also strive to make a difference nationally by campaigning to change laws and raising awareness through training.

We are recognised as leaders in the ‘ending Domestic Abuse’ movement. Do you want to do your part to end domestic abuse?

An exciting opportunity has arisen for two trustees to join our incredible team here at I Choose Freedom. We are looking for committed individuals who can bring strategic guidance and overall governance experience in the charity sector to our existing group of trustees.

I Choose Freedom is a small independent charity dedicated to changing the lives of women and children fleeing abuse. We were founded in 1984 and run 4 refuges across Surrey. We have provided thousands of women and children with safety and freedom.

We were also delighted to have been chosen as a Charity Governance Award Winner in May this year for Covid-19 Response: Embracing Opportunity and Harnessing Risk. You can read more about this and the work we do on the I Choose Freedom website.

The opportunity

We are looking for two trustees who are ambitious and innovative and can help us define the future direction of I Choose Freedom. We are an ambitious charity and have enjoyed a period of rapid growth and success, and now need to consolidate and develop and implement a 5-year strategic plan.

We are looking to fill these roles by early November prior to our board meeting, and are particularly interested in receiving applications from people who have experience and expertise in one or more of the following:

- Experience in the charity sector

- Regulatory systems and governance

- Business strategy and growth

- Financial planning and risk management

- Policy development

Trustees are our most senior leaders. They set our strategic direction, make sure we’re using our resources effectively and ensure we’re having the greatest possible impact on our community. Trustees are expected to undertake duties in a manner that reflects I Choose Freedom’s values and ethos.

As a trustee you will:

- Think strategically and creatively

- Lead the organisation towards fully achieving its commitment and ambition

- Scrutinise the impact we’re having

- Communicate clearly and sensitively in large group discussions

- Use independent judgement to make decisions on behalf of the organisation

- Be committed to our mission, vision and values

Diversity is critical for a board to be effective, enabling varied discussions and active debate and decision making so that together we can have the most significant impact. We encourage applications from people with lived experience of domestic abuse and from all ethnic, socio-economic, religious and professional and personal backgrounds. Whether you’re an experienced trustee or taking your first steps into governance, if you have the commitment, values, and skills, we want to hear from you.

As a trustee, you will receive:

- Induction and training into the role

- Your expenses reimbursed

- Opportunities to develop new skills

- An annual appraisal to help support your development

Time commitment

The trustee role is voluntary with expenses paid, a commitment of approximately 4-8 hours per month. Ten board meetings per year take place - currently virtually via video conference.

Location

Although board meetings are taking place remotely it would be useful if you were able to travel to East Surrey for any face-to-face meetings.

‍

Successful applicants will be expected to undergo an Enhanced level Disclosure and Barring Service check, as well as company director and charity trustee disqualification checks.

The closing date for applications is 23/09/2022

Interviews for successful candidates will be held in the first two weeks of October
