Volunteer opportunity description:
CDS seeks a new treasurer for its board of trustees. The treasurer will be responsible for overseeing the financial processes and budgeting decisions of the organisation, mentoring the Executive Director in this area and providing guidance and support for the organisation as a whole. The right candidate will have accounting and financial management experience, and some knowledge of the charitable sector (or keenness and resources to find out more about best practice in the charitable sector). They will join a dynamic and very active board during a period of big changes for the organisation. They will be positive, thorough, generous and professional, bringing CDS much needed continuity in the financial management. They will have the opportunity to learn from a resilient arts organisation and a board of energetic individuals from across the cultural sectors and beyond, and to bring positive impactful change to the organisation.
The Treasurer is responsible for:
Appointing and managing the accountants and auditors, in collaboration with the staff
Assisting in the drawing up and sign off of yearly accounts, in line with requirements from the Charitable Committee
Having access to the company’s bank accounts, and ensuring this access and knowledge is held by at least two board members at any one time
Monthly exchange with the Director to assess the company’s financial health and address any upcoming risks
Communicating the accounts and any risks with the board at quarterly board meetings, or immediately if an urgent matter
Financial induction to new board members and support for financial understanding of other board members
The role of Trustees
The role of the Board of Trustees is to support the strategic vision and leadership of the
company and ensure Chisenhale Dance Space remains true to its values, relevant to our artistic and local communities, well managed and financially sustainable. Trustees are responsible to ensure the organisation’s values and standards are applied and respected at all levels of
operation. They do this by:
Appointing, appraising and managing CDS’ Director and staff, to whom they delegate day-to-day responsibility for the charity’s operations, financial management and programmes
Identifying, reviewing and mitigating any risks the charity might be facing
Reviewing and signing off accounts and financial statements yearly
Safeguarding the assets of the company
Reviewing, advising on and signing off budgets quarterly
Supporting the fundraising efforts through input into grant writing and encouraging private donations
Reviewing and adapting governance models to ensure the organisation remains efficient and relevant
