The former Royal High School is a remarkable piece of civic heritage. An internationally recognised Greek-revival building designed by Thomas Hamilton, it was completed in 1829 and was the original cause of Edinburgh becoming known as “the Athens of the North”.  Since closing its doors as a school in 1968, the building has struggled to find a new use. In 2015, the Royal High School Preservation Trust put forward a proposal which, after extensive public scrutiny, was unanimously approved by the City Council and is now in the process of being delivered.

The Trust’s proposal seeks to provide an economically sustainable and culturally suitable purpose for the site which would allow continued public use and access to the building.  The relocation of St Mary’s Music School to the building will provide an anchor use, providing classical music education to the highest international standard, however this will be complemented by a new National Centre for Music, to ensure that the opportunities presented by the building and the school are extended to the widest possible, and most diverse, parts of the whole community of Scotland.

A fantastic opportunity for arts and music lovers, the Chair for the National Centre for Music will provide an abundance of creative vision and enthusiasm to drive the project forward. This role allows a passionate individual the opportunity to drive a significantly impactful project forward in its initial years prior to the opening of the site in 2026. The ideal candidate will have a strong appreciation of the benefits which can be derived through wider public involvement in music either as audience or performer and have relevant experience in a significant leadership role. Knowledge and participation in local widening access opportunities would allow the ideal candidate to share their expertise with this profoundly impactful project.

Potential candidates should note that there is a significant time requirement for the role. In line with the values of the project, this role will be non-remunerated. It is likely that after appointment, the Chair will maintain their role until 2028, seeing the project through its initial years. A delightful and hugely meaningful non-executive role to provide the right candidate with the opportunity to lead the National Centre for Music vision.
