About Reading Mencap

Originally founded in 1962 by local parents of children and adults with learning disabilities (LD) and autism. The aim was to provide support so individuals with learning disabilities and their families might lead a full and active life in their community. We now provide services for children and adults with learning disabilities and their parents and carers.

What you will be doing

Trustees are required to attend, Bi-monthly board meetings and join with the other trustees to make specific and strategic decisions about the business and direction of the charity. They also use any specific skills, or areas of knowledge or experience to enable the Board to reach sound decisions.

This role is mainly home-based.

What are we looking for?

We are particularly, but not exclusively, looking for candidates with skills and experience in Marketing or Finance. Most importantly, we are looking for people with a passion to support vulnerable people and help to ensure their equal rights in society.

You will need to have a sense of humour and be able to understand the importance of supporting the morale of paid staff who work with a very needy and deserving sector of the public.  Flexibility, an enquiring mind, and good organisation abilities are also needed.

You do not need any previous governance experience to apply for this role and Trustees will receive a comprehensive induction and Trustee training. Support and advice are also readily available at all times from the Chair and Executive Committee, and other directors and staff.  Reading Mencap is an organisation that believes in mutual support.

What is in it for the volunteer?

You may be a parent of a child or adult who, having experienced ‘the system’, wants to help other parents to navigate their way around it or you may have led an active business life and now, because of early retirement or children flying the nest, you feel that your skills are going to waste or you just want to give something back to your community.  We will give you the opportunity to feel valued for the person you are and give you a chance to brush up your skills or learn new ones you've always fancied trying.  Either way, with us, you could feel re-vitalised, needed and even excited by just being part of an organisation that knows it is only as good as its people.

Commitment

Estimate of time needed: 0-5 hours / month
