The Patients Association is a leading campaigning charity that champions patient and public concerns across the health and social care sector. We are passionate about embedding patient partnership across the health and social care system, and work in partnership with patients, carers and a diverse range of organisations, including the NHS and other charities, to achieve this goal.

Location: London, but we are still working virtually.

Hours: The Board meets quarterly and there is an expectation that Trustees will attend all Board meetings with a minimum of two Board meetings a year in person in London; the Finance Committee meets quarterly;

Tenure: All trustees are expected to serve for three years and are eligible for re-election or re-appointment for another three-year term.

The role is voluntary, but reasonable expenses are paid.

The Honorary Treasurer is expected too:

  • Oversee the strategic management of financial resources and overall risk management. Monitor the charity’s financial standing. Work with the Chief Executive, to provide reports to the Board regarding cashflow forecasting, management of the reserves policy, and report on the charity’s financial health to the Board. Ensure the charity has the appropriate level of financial controls in place, ensuring that there is no conflict between any investment held and the aims and objects of the charity, and preparing accounts for the Charity Commission. Chair the Finance Sub-committee.

We are looking for an Honorary Treasurer who has experience in governance and finance and has the knowledge and understanding to maintain oversight of the charity’s financial activities at a strategic level.

  • You will offer well-informed views, constructive challenges, and a commitment to best practices in relation to financial matters and their application in the charity sector and ideally a sound knowledge of financial legislation relating to the running of a registered charity. With other Trustees, you will focus on the charity’s strategic purpose, patient partnership. Experience and understanding of the UK health and social care sectors are highly desirable, as are digital skills, but not essential. You will share the values of The Patients Association - compassion, partnership, inclusiveness, and empowerment. You understand and accept the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of Trusteeship and adhere to Nolan’s seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.

A full role description is available on our website: www.patients-association.gov.uk

We welcome applications from potential trustees from a wide range of diverse backgrounds. We want to make sure that the people we represent, are represented in our Trustee Board.

In return…

As a member of the Board of Trustees, you will contribute to the wide adoption of patient partnership throughout the health and social care system in the UK, and experience working with a wide range of external stakeholders in health and care.

If you are interested in the role and would like an informal discussion, please contact the Chair of Trustees Lucy Watson lucy.watson@patients-association.org.uk, Vice Chair Julie Thallon Julie.thallon@patients-association.org.uk or Rachel Power Chief Executive Rachel.power@patients-association.org.uk Tel. 020 8423 9111

Your application should be submitted via email to Holly Sinclair (Personal Assistant to the Chief Executive) at Holly.Sinclair@patients-association.org.uk and should include your CV and supporting statement.

Closing date for application: 20th October

Interviews either in person in London or virtually: w/c 7th November.
