The Patients Association is a leading campaigning charity that champions patient and public concerns across the health and social care sector. We are passionate about embedding patient partnership across the health and social care system, and work in partnership with patients, carers and a diverse range of organisations, including the NHS and other charities, to achieve this goal.

Location: London, but we are still working virtually.

Hours: The Board meets quarterly and there is an expectation that Trustees will attend all Board meetings with a minimum of two Board meetings a year in person in London; the Finance Committee meets quarterly;

Tenure: All trustees are expected to serve for three years and are eligible for re-election or re-appointment for another three-year term.

The role is voluntary, but reasonable expenses are paid.

The Chair of the Board of Trustees is expected too:

  • Provide leadership and direction to the Board of Trustees and enable the Board to fulfil its responsibilities for the overall governance and strategic direction of the organisation. Ensure the organisation pursues its objects as defined in its governing document, charity law, company law and other relevant legislation/regulations. Work in partnership with the Chief Executive, senior staff members and support the employees, helping them achieve the aims of the organisation; and to optimise the relationship between the board of Trustees and staff. Facilitate the Board of Trustees in stimulating excellent, well-rounded and carefully considered strategic decision making You will chair the charity’s annual general meeting, encouraging members’ partnership with the charity. Act as an ambassador for the organisation, engaging with members and stakeholders.

We are looking for a Chair who is passionate about improving patients’ experience of health and care.

  • You will have Board level experience and an ability to lead the setting and delivery of our strategy for patient partnership. You will exercise independent judgement, are a good communicator and have the interpersonal skills to work successfully with other Trustees, the Chief Executive and staff members. You share the charity’s values of compassion, partnership, inclusiveness, and empowerment. You understand and accept the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of Trusteeship and adhere to Nolan’s seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.

This is an exciting time to join our Charity. As our Chair you will lead the next stage in the implementation of our strategy, as we broaden our reach and focus on our role of speaking up for patients.  The Chair should be able to commit to working two days a month, on average, for the charity.
