Who we are

University College of Estate Management (UCEM) is a long-standing and leading provider of supported online education. We exist to provide accessible, relevant and cost-effective education which enhances careers, increases professionalism and contributes to a sustainable built environment. Operating from the UK and Hong Kong we have a global reach, and at any one time over 3,500 students are studying online with us. UCEM passed its first ever inspection by Ofsted with flying colours after earning an overall rating of ‘Good’ in November 2021.

The role

It really is an exciting time to be joining us as a Trustee. You will have the opportunity to make a valuable contribution in shaping the future of UCEM, as we work to implement our vision to be the Centre of Excellence for Built Environment Education and to become the world’s most sustainable university.

Our diverse Board of Trustees currently has nine independent members, and we are looking for a new Trustee to join us. The Board is responsible for the overall governance, monitoring and strategic direction of UCEM. The Board works together with the Executive Team to ensure that the institution achieves the objectives defined in our Royal Charter and operates in compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements, including the Office for Students (OFS), the Charity Commission, the Education and Skills Fundings Agency and Ofsted. In addition to this, the Board contributes to ensuring that our institution meets the expectations of the Higher Education Code of Governance.

We are specifically looking for a Trustee with expertise in strategic approach to financial oversight, who can support the Board in continuing to meet the challenges of financial sustainability within the context of the wider Higher Education environment and as a registered charity. You will ideally have experience in a Senior Role which has involved financial planning and management, either within Higher Education or the Built Environment sector with commercial acumen, sound judgement and the ability to support and challenge the Executive team.

However, if your area of expertise is not specifically in higher education but you feel you can contribute to the work of UCEM your application will still be considered. Experience of operating at a senior level in either an executive or non-executive capacity is desirable for the successful candidate. You will also have a passion for higher education and sustainability.

As a Trustee, you will be expected to attend Board of Trustee meetings (4 per year, in person) usually held at our office in Reading Berkshire or in London. You would also be appointed to the Finance Committee. Involvement in a Sub-Committee/Working Group requires you to be available to attend approx. 3 additional meetings per year, usually held remotely.
