The Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) is seeking to appoint a co-opted Trustee with a background in strategic financial, investment and/or business management to join the RTPI’s Board of Trustees and its Finance Committee.
The Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) champions the power of planning by creating prosperous places and vibrant communities. The Institute supports and represents more than 25,000 members worldwide throughout their careers. We shape planning policy, raise professional standards and are the only body in the UK to confer Chartered status to planners as the highest professional qualification.


As a co-opted member on the RTPI Board of Trustees (BOT), you will be responsible for the management of the affairs of the Institute and its charitable objects. All members of the BOT become trustees of the RTPI, a registered charity. Trustees are expected to abide by the rules in the RTPI’s governing documents; to act responsibly in the interests of the charity; use reasonable care and skill and make well-informed decisions, taking advice wherever needed.
The ideal candidate would have experience in a similar voluntary role and a thorough understanding of how a professional membership organisation operates.

The RTPI’s Nomination Subcommittee will assess the applications and recommend potential candidates to the Board of Trustees for its final decision.


What’s expected of you
• To dedicate your time and expertise amounting to the equivalent of one working day per calendar month.
• To serve for two-year term, starting in January 2023.
• To attend six meetings Board of Trustees meetings a year and allow time for preparation work and follow up actions.
• Attend the minimum of one out of four General Assembly meetings per year.
• To attend Finance Committee meetings and represent the interests of this committee to the Board. The Finance Committee typically meets four times year but can meet on one or two more occasions if required. The Committee meets between 2pm and 4pm. All meetings are held online apart from one in-person meeting in Central London each year.
• To declare any potential conflicts of interest.
• To adhere to relevant RTPI policies, procedures, and behaviours.
• Board meetings typically run from 11am to 3:30pm and can be held in London or other major cities, such as Birmingham, Cardiff or Glasgow in which the RTPI has an office or
strong links. The RPTI will cover the cost of your travel expenses and overnight accommodation if necessary.
• By default, members of the Board of Trustees become members of the General Assembly
• All Trustees are required to act in the interests of the RTPI, irrespective of any commitments to other organisations or groups or any personal interests.
