We Belong Treasurer - 2022

We Belong is the UK’s first migrant youth-led charity. We believe that young people should be central
and active participants in the conversation to create positive, impactful social change. Established in 2019, we are a small but growing charity with offices in London and Manchester, supported by funders ranging from Sigrid Rausing Trust to the National Lottery. Our recent policy win on the ten-year route to settlement demonstrates our ability to make an active difference to the lives of 300,000 young people with precarious status in the UK today.

We are now seeking a new Treasurer to support the financial management and governance of the charity, joining a board of Trustees made up of both experienced professionals and young people with lived experience of migration.

We specifically wish to recruit a professional committed to the success of our charity who has the financial expertise and qualifications to maintain an overview of our financial affairs, work with our CEO, Operations Manager and external accountant to ensure that proper financial records and procedures are maintained and communicate financial information clearly to the board.

The Treasurer would be required to attend 4 board meetings a year, and should expect to be able to offer around 3 hours a week support for financial processes.

Job Description

The role of the Treasurer is to keep the Board of Trustees informed about the financial health of We Belong, enabling the Board to meet its financial responsibilities and to be assured that the charity can continue to deliver its charitable objectives.

The Treasurer attends four board meetings a year and has regular meetings with the external accountants, Chairman, Chief Executive and Operations Manager.

Requirements of the role include:

  • Overseeing the preparation of monthly management accounts by the external accountants and the in-house Operations Manager.

  • Supervising the preparation of annual accounts and their presentation to the board.

  • Ensuring that proper financial records are kept, that finances run smoothly and that financial activities comply with relevant legislation.

  • Advising on finance procedures and ensuring that these remain appropriate for the charity’s activities.

  • Assisting the Chair and Chief Executive with the preparation of annual revenue and expenditure budgets.

  • Monitoring reserves and cash flow and making the Board aware when these are below required levels.

  • Approving all bank payments made by the charity to ensure segregation of duties from the in-house finance function.
