Who we are

We are a 92-year-old national youth charity dedicated to improving the life chances of young people. We help young people access the Army Cadet programme and thus to develop and achieve through participation in it, and we also support the adult volunteers who deliver the training. We achieve this predominantly by grant giving, but we also provide some important membership benefits and enabling services.

The role

The overarching role of the Treasurer as a specialist trustee is to monitor the financial administration of the charity and report to the board of trustees at regular intervals on its state of financial health, in line with best practice, and in compliance with the governing document and legal requirements.  The role has different parts.  In general, you would be part of our board’s team overseeing the strategic direction of ACCT UK to ensure that it achieves its charitable objects.  In particular, as the specialist finance trustee, you would provide fellow board members with financial insight and advice, chair the Finance & General Purposes Committee, and oversee and monitor the work of the charity’s financial team.

The Treasurer is not expected to be involved in the minutiae of day-to-day financial management.  The Deputy Chief Executive is the de facto Finance Director and working to him a re a finance manager and finance assistant.  The Treasurer therefore oversees and monitors their work.

Whether you are a qualified financial professional or qualified by experience, understanding the links between activities, people and finances is more important than expertise in technical accounting matters.  The aim is for ACCT UK is to deliver sustainable finances and achieve a social return.  We do however seek someone who is completely at ease looking at all forms of accounts with the experienced instinct to spot when detail does not look right and to be able to drill into the detail until a satisfactory answer or explanation is provided.
