We want a leader with financial experience and the scrutiny and critical thinking skills to help Durham Students Union continue to deliver for its members and enact its new strategy.

Durham SU was created by students in 1899 to bring students from across the university together.

The Union was founded when there were only four colleges and its role as a place for students to come together has become more valuable as the university has grown.

The ethos of bringing students from across the university together from the separate colleges continues today. Our purpose is to be the champion of every Durham student, we do this by supporting 250+ societies run by students which cater for a vast array of interests, and through our elected union officers who boldly represent students’ views at all levels of the university.

We have one of the most engaged student populations in the UK with 64% of students involved in at least one of our societies.

We are in the process of developing a new strategy. This will see us focus on our core purpose, enhance our commitment on bringing students together and support students to remove any barriers that they encounter during their time at Durham.

We currently have a strong level of expertise at the staff level within the Union, and we have been able to capitalize on this and act as an outsourced finance partner for other SUs. This service has a significant opportunity to grow and could help us generate additional income, which would be reinvested back into our services to support students.

We currently have a gap in our financial expertise on our trustee board.

We want a leader that has a high level of financial literacy who will also be able to Chair of Finance and Risk Committee and who has a high level of commercial experience leading profit/loss accounts.

We welcome applications from first time trustees and have an excellent annual training program to develop your experience of trusteeship and governance.

We have structured our board so that there are 4 quarterly meetings, 4 committee meetings and an annual away day. We can provide meeting dates 12 months in advance. In addition to meetings a short check in with the CEO/FD every few weeks would be welcomed.
