Where will they be working?
From home

Stopford Cat Rescue is a registered charity operating in and around south Manchester (UK) and is run entirely by volunteers.

Our charity has three simple and clear objectives to help cats in the area:

  • Homing - Finding good homes for stray and unwanted cats
  • Neutering - Encouraging the neutering of cats
  • Information - Improving the public's understanding of cats

We operate from our volunteer's homes and gardens so don't have a "rehoming centre" as such - this keeps our overheads to a minimum whilst giving maximum operational flexibility.

We are looking for a Treasurer to act as principal financial officer, maintaining and administering the accounts of the Charity.

This is a volunteer role suitable for someone passionate about animal welfare and with previous expertise in book-keeping or accountancy.

You will be mainly working from home but will be expected to attend periodic committee meetings as well as the Charity’s AGM. These meetings are held in South Manchester, typically Bramhall or Hazel Grove.

Key activities

These are primarily:

  • Recording and managing finances (how money enters and leaves the charity)
  • Ensuring legal compliance
  • Maximising public benefit (ensuring value for money)
  • Helping secure funding

  This will include:

  • To maintain, and improve where necessary, sound financial systems in order to retain full control of the Charity’s funds.
  • To take a lead role in ensuring the committee set annual financial budgets and forward plan the income and expenditure so that the accounts balance in the long term.
  • To provide a written financial reports each month giving an analysis of the income and expenditure against budget with commentary as necessary.
  • To liaise with the independent examiner regarding the production of the annual accounts and treasurer's report for the Annual General Meeting / Charity Commission, including SORP statement.
  • To maintain control of all bank accounts as authorised by the committee.
  • To execute and operate the committee’s financial decisions and act as co-signatory on all cheques as required.
  • To maintain control over all paying-in books, cheque and receipt books and to ensure their correct use.

Times and preferred duration of commitment

Flexible but typically 2-4 hours a week. You will need to attend bi-monthly committee meetings and the AGM.

Officers are formally appointed for a 12 month term at each Annual General Meeting.

  • You will need to be able to work with people and have good interpersonal skills.
  • You do not need to be an expert although commitment, commonsense and the ability to be objective is vital.
  • Basic IT skills are a necessity.
  • You will need to have had previous experience in a book-keeping, treasurer or accountancy role.
