Aston-Mansfield want to see more children, young people and families in Newham and east London leading happy healthy lives, realising their potential and unlocking their ambition. Using an integrated and community focused approach we will make long long-lasting change, offering opportunity, community and inspiration to children, families and young people in Newham and east London.

Aston-Mansfield is an operational charity. It’s sister charity, Aston-Mansfield Charitable Trust (AMCT) owns assets which are used to support Aston-Mansfield and other charities. We are looking for one Treasurer for both organisations.

We are on an exciting journey, realigning our asset base with our strategy. We need someone who can help maintain an overview of finances and financial risk management and ensure the Board has a clear view of our financial viability.

What will you be doing?

Trustees are focused on aligning our long term finances with our strategy, and significantly adapting our property portfolio. The Treasurer will support the organisations through the financial planning, management and risk assessment of this journey.

We want to create more diverse boards, and in particular welcome applications from women and from people from a minority ethnic background.

The Treasurer will maintain an overview of the organisations' financial affairs and ensure they are legal, constitutional, within accepted accounting practices and comply with the Charity SORP.  They will ensure that the Boards of Trustees have a clear view of the financial viability of the organisations and will oversee arrangements for financial risk management, ensuring that these are adequate to the governance requirements, legal obligations and organisational needs of Aston-Mansfield and AMCT.  The Treasurer will work with the Head of Finance and Administration to ensure that proper records are kept, and effective financial control procedures are in place.

Experience and qualities required

  • Professional and recognised accountancy qualification – ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent. Knowledge and experience of current finance practice relevant to voluntary and community organisations with a turnover of around £1M, whose main income streams are property/enterprise related. Ability to communicate clearly and provide leadership to the Boards on financial matters Tact and diplomacy A willingness to listen to the views of others but also to speak one’s mind Ability to work effectively as a member of a team An understanding of the legal responsibilities and liabilities of a trustee An interest in, and commitment to the mission, values and activities of Aston-Mansfield and AMCT A willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to their duties as Treasurer and Trustee

We want to create more diverse boards, and in particular would welcome applications from women and people from a minority ethnic background.

What difference will you make?

This is an exciting time to join us as Treasurer. COVID and the Cost of Living crisis are increasing demand for our work, and people's needs are changing. We are in the midst of implementing our strategy and financial sustainability plans so that our focus is on supporting people, rather than managing buildings and owning property. We are growing our work, and diversifying our income. The new Treasurer will therefore have a significant impact on the scale and scope of our charitable work.

Time commitment

Board meetings are held bi-monthly, at 5pm. The Treasurer will need to meet regularly with Head of Finance, and review finance reports etc

Before you apply

Applications are through the Reach platform. The process involves an initial informal conversation with the CEO, followed by a meeting with the Chair, and current Treasurer. There will also be an opportunity to meet the Head of Finance.

There is no additional application form.

Deadline: 30th September.
