Who we are

Islington Centre for Refugees and Migrants was founded in 1997 in the crypt of a church to help local asylum seekers in Islington.

The Centre has a dedicated and talented staff team including trained English Language teachers and those with legal and casework experience of working with refugees and asylum seekers. These skills are complemented by around 40 volunteers who provide direct support through activities. We also have in place accountancy support to the executive.

By joining the Board of Trustees at Islington Centre you will:

  • Be at the centre of an organisation making a huge difference to the lives of refugees and asylum seekers
  • Use your skills and experience to good use, to benefit the community and provide better services for people who need them
  • Learn new skills and new confidence in a whole range of areas - from finance to management to team working and decision making, different from your previous experience.

What you will do as a Trustee

The Treasurer’s role is to take the lead in the provision of financial oversight by the Board of Trustees, support the CEO and accountant as needed, provide knowledge and assurance that we adhere to best governance practice and act as a sounding Board.

They will interpret information to support the Board for those who do not come from financial backgrounds to reach financial decisions, increase our collective understanding and confidence that as a combined Board we are carefully managing risk (financial and other).

We have in place a freelance accountant who works on the day-to-day bookkeeping and prepares our accounts and an Independent Examiner who reports on our financial statements in our Annual Report & Accounts.

What we are looking for in a Treasurer

We welcome applications from people wanting to take their first charity Treasurer role and will seek to provide relevant support.

These are the skills and experience we require:

  • Financial skills and experience
  • Recognised accountancy qualification
  • Ability to analyse and interpret financial information
  • Ability to clearly communicate financial information to the Board
  • Willingness to provide financial advice and support to the management team as needed
  • Knowledge and experience of fundraising finance practice in voluntary and community organisations (desirable)

How much time is needed

The Trustees and Treasurer will be required to attend 6 Board Meetings per year and a AGM. These are online for the foreseeable future and are held on Monday evenings.

Please see the candidate pack for more information.
