About Nottingham Trent Students Union

Nottingham Trent Students’ Union (NTSU) is one of more than 550 students’ unions across the country. With more than 40,000 members, 300 student staff and nearly 60 career staff, along with huge range of services across multiple campuses we are one of the biggest. We run coffee shops, bars, nightclubs, advice centre, representation, student groups and much more.

What will you be doing?

Nottingham Trent Students’ Union is an independent registered charity and company limited by guarantee. It provides charitable, representation and commercial services to the 40,000 students at Nottingham Trent University on five sites across Nottinghamshire. The diverse range of our services mean that we operate everything from high quality student advice services to 2,500 capacity nightclubs, often in the same building! In a typical year NTSU has a turnover of £6.5m with £1.9m coming via grant income from the University and £4.6m from our commercial trading which allows us to provide great student experiences as well as reinvest surplus into our charitable services.

NTSU has a staff team of approximately 60 permanent staff who are supplemented by up to 350 part-time student staff members. We are currently three years into our 2020-2025 strategic plan which drives our focus on being the best advocates for students we can be, encouraging healthy communities and celebrating the diversity of our membership. We have three external Trustees who are appointed to work alongside our 10 Student and Sabbatical Trustees. While all Trustees have equal status, we look to External Trustees to bring specific skills and experience to the Board to strengthen the Union’s governance. Could that be you?

While our Student and Sabbatical Trustees have regularly reflected the diversity of the Union’s membership, this has not been the case with our Lay Trustees. Inclusion is one of our core values and we would be keen to enhance the diversity of our Board and welcome applications from candidates from under-represented groups, we would especially welcome candidates who define as being from an ethnic minority and/or women. We are open to first-time Trustees and provide high-quality training and inductions to all Board members.

Regardless of your background, we expect that you are able to role model inclusive leadership behaviours and practice and be committed to working alongside students in a democratic environment.

The Union would be particularly keen to hear from people with an expertise in the charity sector, with an understanding of charity legislation and regulations, a connection to the midlands area is welcomed as we look to develop our influence with stakeholders in the local area.

As part of our board you will support and shape our work and strategic direction, as well as help us achieve our purpose to empower students to make NTU the best academic and personal experience for themselves and others.

As an external trustee, you will have a real opportunity to offer your unique skill set to help the strategic progression of the charity. 

 

Commitment:

5 x 2hr board meetings annually. Sub-committees meet between 3/5 times a year 1hr meetings. Pre-reading is required

Interviews will be scheduled for Tuesday 28th February 2023, we ask all candidates to be available on this date due to the availability of trustees on our appointments committee. We will be hosting two informal Q&A sessions online via teams to give potential candidates the opportunity to speak to existing members of the board. The dates for these Q&A sessions are; Monday 30th January 2023 at 3-4pm & Monday 13th February 2023 at 3-4pm
