Job Details

Are you looking to put your experience, knowledge and skills to use in a challenging and exciting charitable environment?  Then why not consider becoming a trustee of Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust.

Message from the Chair of PNBPT

As Chair of the Trust, I am proud to be part of a charity that has led the conservation and regeneration of the historic naval dockyard in Portsmouth since the mid-1980s, and more recently the continuing re-development of the Priddy’s Hard site in Gosport.  Our overarching aims are to preserve, restore and reinvigorate buildings, spaces and boats that are of key naval historical significance, so that these can be experienced, enjoyed and inhabited by the visiting public and our tenants.

The full potential of these two sites has yet to be realised, both as world centres of maritime heritage, and as hubs of economic activity, capable of sustaining themselves whilst making a valuable contribution to the economies of Portsmouth and Gosport and the broader south coast region.

We are looking to recruit up to four new Trustees with skills and experience that complement the nature of the Trust’s charitable purposes.  This is an opportunity to play a valuable role in leading and contributing to the long-term preservation, development and sustainability of these unique naval heritage sites and assets under the Trust’s care.  If you are excited by this prospect, we very much hope to hear from you.

David Butters

Chair of Board of Trustees

Summary of the role

Trustees have responsibility for overseeing the direction and performance of the Trust. They are guardians of the charity’s assets and are responsible for their use and security. Trustees are also responsible for the governance of the Trust and ensuring we meet all legal and regulatory requirements.

We have a skills-based board, with trustees having one or more identified skills, which are relevant to the nature of the charity and its key areas of operation.  We are particularly looking for expertise in financial management (preferably at Finance Director level) and ideally someone with connections to individual and corporate funders.

We welcome applications from individuals from a range of backgrounds and experiences as part of our commitment to broaden the  diversity of our board.  Previous experience as a trustee is not necessary.

To learn more about this unique opportunity, and to find out how to apply, please read the full Trustee Information Pack on our website.

Deadline for applications: 23 June 2023

We are custodians of historic buildings, boats and spaces in and around Portsmouth Harbour, we breathe new life into this Naval heritage, creating energy and vibrancy, ensuring that it is sustainable and accessible for all.  We are an ambitious and collaborative charity. We actively create authentic, educational and enjoyable places, experiences and opportunities.

We play a vital and creative role in the conservation, regeneration and interpretation of our two sites, the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and Priddy’s Hard in Gosport, working to preserve the historic fabric of the sites as well as enhancing understanding of the people who built, lived, and worked in the area. We work in partnership with tenants and key stakeholders on both sites to bring these places to life.

As well as buildings, we restore and operate a flotilla of historically significant vessels, ranging from a D-Day motor gunboat to a Boer War steam cutter. As an organisation we are a property regeneration agency, a landlord and an asset manager, and a cultural leader. The Trust currently has 35 paid employees and over 100 volunteers.
