About Homeless Link
Homeless Link is an independent charity and the national membership body for frontline homelessness services in England. We represent 850 organisations across England. We work to make services better and campaign for policy change that will help end homelessness. Our vision is a country free of homelessness and we support our members to work together to achieve change and positive futures for people who are homeless or vulnerably housed.
We offer our members events, training, leadership development, coaching and consultancy, to help them develop and improve their homelessness and supported housing services. We also work in partnership with other homelessness-related organisations, across the sectors, to develop new approaches and improve current practices to support people out of homelessness. Alongside this, we work in policy, research and campaigning to influence change by making a compelling case to policymakers at all levels, drawing together the strongest evidence, and identifying solutions that prevent homelessness.
We are a leading voice in advocacy and are raising awareness, effecting social change and leading campaigns for action to end homelessness.
Homeless Link is a multi-faceted organisation that also provides an online case management system developed for the homelessness sector and used by over 280 of our members to manage all their work with the people they help. We support our members through grants programmes and we run a multi-agency database recording information about people sleeping rough and the wider street population in London. The system, which is commissioned and funded by the Mayor of London and managed by Homeless Link, represents the UK’s most detailed and comprehensive source of information about rough sleeping.
About the role
It is an exciting time to join Homeless Link as we experience a key time for society to enact change and to represent our members, whilst building our new strategy. We welcomed a new Chair in 2021 and a new Director of Finance earlier this year. As we embark on creating a new strategy to start next year, we are looking for a finance specialist to be our new Chair of Resources & Enterprise.
This person will be a commercially astute finance leader who has experience of operating at a senior level in complex organisations. This person will be able to communicate financial information clearly while supporting the board to identify risks and to innovate.
Who we are looking for
We are looking for someone who is passionate about ending homelessness and supporting our 850 member organisations whilst being strategic and having a good understanding of governance. We are open to first-time trustees and want to ensure our board represents our society as a whole.
We have just established a new sub-committee structure comprised of three sub-committee; Audit & Risk, Resources & Enterprise and Remuneration & Nominations. The new committees will start to meet in September and will be reviewed in due course.
We expect the overall time commitment to be about a day a month which includes preparation for board meetings, attending board and sub-committee meetings, ad hoc conversations with trustees and the executive, especially our Director of Finance. The board meets 4 times a year at Homeless Link’s offices in London, and meetings are usually from noon to 4 p.m. Our Chair of Resources & Enterprise will chair this sub-committee which meets 4 times a year virtually for up to 2 hours. The Chair of Resources & Enterprise will also be a member of the Audit & Risk Committee which meets virtually.
Once a year we hold a Board Strategy Away Day which is an overnight event including a visit to a member’s service and a board dinner. We also have an AGM which can be attended in person or online for an hour.
