A part-time volunteer Treasurer is required by the Parish of Buxted and Hadlow Down, East Sussex, a United Parish with three parish churches.

The Treasurer does not have to be a churchgoer or have formal qualifications, although a good understanding of accounting principles is needed.  Basic computer skills are required, including the use of Word and Excel software. Knowledge of the Parish’s Quicken bookkeeping software would also be useful, but this can easily be learned.

The Parish is a registered charity and you will be a member and trustee of the Parochial Church Council (PCC) and report to the PCC at their bi-monthly meetings. You will also be a member of the Parish’s Standing Committee, which meets between PCC meetings, as and when required.

Working with a bookkeeper and a cashier, the Treasurer’s key responsibilities are to:

  • Ensure that all financial transactions carried out on behalf of the PCC are properly authorised and recorded, in compliance with Charity Commission, Church of England and PCC policies and procedures. Monitor the PCC’s finances throughout the year, prepare a report for each PCC meeting and advise the PCC on financial matters. Draft an annual budget to assist the PCC to plan how it will fulfil its objectives for the coming year. Submit the annual accounts to the Independent Examiner for checking. Present the annual accounts to the PCC and the Annual Parochial Church Meeting. Send copies to the Charity Commission and Diocese and complete any national financial returns required.

The Treasurer does not have to live in the Parish, but close adjacency is preferred  for the above meetings and discussions with the rector, churchwardens and PCC members.

If you, or someone you know, might be interested in this position and can spare a few hours a week, please contact us.
