Job Details

We’re looking for two new people to join the board of the British Science Association: a Treasurer and a Trustee with communications expertise. These are volunteer roles governing our medium-sized UK charity. We’re seeking a range of skills and experience and to broaden our diversity – A science background is not necessary. Feel free to get in touch for a chat if you’re interested.

Your role

We are seeking a Treasurer to oversee the financial affairs of the BSA, ensuring they are conducted with probity, accountability and transparency; and to ensure that Council receives sufficient information to enable Trustees to carry out their financial responsibilities.

We are also looking for a Trustee with a communications background to provide strategic oversight of the organisation's communication goals and strategy.

In addition, as charity trustees your role will be to work with other Council members to set the strategic direction for the charity and oversee the effective running of the organisation. You will also be expected to act as an ambassador for the BSA with our key external audiences and to demonstrate leadership on the BSA’s commitment to improve diversity and inclusion.

What we are looking for

To get the most out of being on the BSA’s Council, we suggest that you have a passion for our vision and goals and can commit to the time and effort required. Our Council members need strategic vision, independent judgement, and an ability to work effectively as part of a team.

We are a UK-wide charity and are interested in regional representation and diversity of mindset in addition to aiming for Council to be demographically representative of the UK.

We are especially keen to hear from people from communities who are currently under-represented on Council, including people from ethnic minority backgrounds and people with disabilities.

Term and time commitment

The initial term is three years. Council members are eligible for re-appointment at the expiry of that term, for one additional term only.

There are four Council meetings per year, lasting four hours each, with prior reading of the pack of papers.

In addition, the Treasurer is required to Chair the Finance and Audit and Risk Committees, which meet quarterly for approximately 2 hours each. Each meeting may require some input into the papers beforehand.

Closing date: 23:59 on Sunday 10th December 2023
Interviews: w/c 8th or 15th January 2024

You will be informed as soon as possible after the application deadline whether you have been selected for interview.

No agencies please.

Company

The British Science Association's mission is to transform the diversity and inclusivity of science. We want more people, especially those from groups that are currently underrepresented in science, to feel that science is relevant to their lives. We believe that science is for everyone, so we work with partners across the UK to give every child, young person and adult the opportunity to connect with science in a way that matters to them.
