Job Details

We are looking for an additional trustee, someone with financial expertise, to join our exciting charity.

The Avenues Youth Project is an established West London based youth centre, delivering high-quality recreation activities and skills training to children and young people to help them fulfil their potential. Established in 1979, and highly respected, we are open 6 days a week, 48 weeks a year and currently have well over 1,000 members aged 8-18.

As a mature organisation, with a £1m+ income, we have established systems and a very good staff team in place. As a trustee, you will be responsible for overseeing the financial management of The Avenues, ensuring transparency, compliance and effective financial decision-making.

You will play an integral role in ensuring the charity remains on a stable financial footing and able to continue to provide much needed services to the community at a time when little other support is available. 

You will need to attend 5 Executive Committee meetings and 5 Finance Sub-Committee meetings each year, often on Zoom, collaborating with other trustees as appropriate.


Financial Oversight:

Oversee the annual budget in collaboration with the Finance Manager, Chief Executive and the Executive Committee (of which you will be one of 10 members).

Working with the Executive Committee and Finance Sub-Committee in putting in place long-term financial strategies to support the sustainability of the charity.

Hold catch-ups with the Finance Manager to discuss financial performance, providing guidance and support where needed.

Provide regular and accurate financial updates to the Executive Committee and Finance Committee (disclosing potential risks and issues as they arise).

Audit and Compliance:

Support the Finance Manager when dealing with auditors during annual audits and ensure financial records are audit ready.

Ensure compliance with all financial regulations.

Financial Decision-Making:

Provide financial advice to the Executive Committee and support informed decision and policy making.

What are we looking for?

You will have:

Appropriate professional financial qualification. Experience in budgeting, risk management and financial oversight, preferably in a charitable organisation. Good understanding of financial regulations and reporting requirements. Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate financial information to diverse audiences. Commitment to the mission and values of The Avenues. We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds and with lived experience or experience of volunteering in local communities. We are passionate about ensuring a strong mix on our Executive Committee with people from varying backgrounds, experiences and skills.

Where: 3-7 Third Avenue, London W10 4RS

Remote opportunity, or mainly at home, with occasional on-site visits.

Time:  Outside and/or Inside office hours (we are flexible).

Estimate of time needed: around 60-75 hours per year total, including meetings.

Executive committee meetings: 5 times a year, plus a short AGM.

Finance sub-committee meetings: 5 times a year, and occasional ad hoc meetings.
