The pool was built in 1974 by local subscription in response to the number of local children drowning in the nearby river Ribble. The pool was redeveloped and modernised in 2023 and has always been run as a charitable organisation and managed by a volunteer committee of local people. There is still strong local support for the pool which been steadily accumulated over the last 50 years.

The pool is open to all and provides a wide variety of swimming activities for all abilities, including swimming lessons for all the local primary schools and swimming classes, exercise classes, mother and baby swims, and lifeguard training. The pool hosts the local swimming club, Settle Stingrays, and the Disabled Swimming Club and Silver Swimmers.
