Interburns (www.interburns.org), UK registered charity, is an innovative, dynamic, global health sector NGO focussed on improving the quality of burn prevention and treatment in low resource and conflict settings.  It is a charity that is highly regarded and unique in its field. Since 2006, we have built a large international community of volunteer experts who share a passion for burn prevention and treatment, and who have supported each other to develop and share resources that are innovative and proven to reduce burn injuries in low-and middle-income countries where the highest number of injuries occur.

The organisation supports long-term change through strategic planning, building networks of multidisciplinary practitioners to share best practice, and delivery of tailor-made tools and training programmes. We also work with international partners to improve emergency response mechanisms for mass casualty disasters.

Being a Trustee of Interburns is an exciting and fulfilling role. We are in the stage of growth and are looking for a trustee that will be keen to go on this journey with us. The most effective Boards benefit from individuals from a diverse range of backgrounds, experiences and skill sets. We are looking for a new Trustee with skills and experience in charity finance and accounting.

Purpose of the role:

As a Trustee you will be a member of the of the Board, which is responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity, as well as developing the organisation’s aims, objectives and goals in accordance with the governing document and legal and regulatory guidelines.

Main duties:

As a member of the Board of Trustees you will:

  • Actively contribute to giving firm strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policies, defining goals, setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets. Safeguard the good name and values of Interburns and ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation is key to the role. Monitoring the financial health and stability of Interburns. Support the Chief Executive Officer. Inspire and motivate our global network to deliver on the vision of Interburns to reduce the number of global burn injuries and improve the outcomes.

All trustees are required to ensure Interburns complies with its governing document, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations.

Related duties:

  • To act as an ambassador and advocate for Interburns. Be willing and able to use specific knowledge or experience to help the Board of Trustees reach sound decisions. All Trustees must abide by Interburns’ code of conduct and current best practice, to attend and participate in meetings regularly via Teams/Zoom or in-person (these are quarterly).

The Trustee with finance responsibilities takes on additional responsibilities which include:

  • Being a member of the planned Finance and Audit Committee, FAC. Specific responsibly for adherence to the financial policy. Maintaining an overview of Interburns’ financial affairs and ensuring they are legal, constitutional and within accepted accounting practice. Commit to 2 - 3 hours each month to a financial review meeting with Interburns staff. Ensuring that the charity applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objectives. Ensuring that Interburns maintains a strong Risk Management framework with appropriate risk mitigation procedures.
  • Periodically review and approve banking and treasury management arrangements.
  • Ensuring that Interburns complies with banking regulations, supported by due diligence and monitoring processes.
  • Work with the Treasurer overseeing the maintenance of proper financial records and procedures, as well as the production of necessary financial reports and returns.
  • Support the Treasurer in providing advice and information to the Trustees on their financial stewardship responsibilities. Maintaining strong relationships with the Chair, Treasurer and Chief Executive, acting as a sounding board when required.

Person specification

Experience:

  • Significant experience of strategic financial leadership. Demonstrable experience of building and sustaining relationships with key stakeholders and colleagues to achieve organisational objectives is essential. A proven track record of well-founded judgement and effective decision making is essential. Experience working with smaller and larger organisations. Demonstrable experience of working at a senior leadership team or Board level. Strong understanding of charitable governance structures. MUST be based in UK due to the nature of the role

Knowledge, skills, and understanding:

  • Strong empathy with Interburns’ mission. Willingness and enthusiasm to devote the necessary time and effort. Good, unprejudiced judgement and strategic vision. An understanding, awareness, and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship. An ability to work efficiently and respectfully as a member of a team. An understanding of the roles of the Chair, Trustees and Chief Executive. Inclusive and collegiate approach to Trusteeship.
