About the University of Sussex Students' Union (USSU)
The University of Sussex Students' Union (USSU) is a vibrant, student-led charity that enhances the university experience for over 18,000 students across multiple institutions, including the University of Sussex, the Institute of Development Studies, and Brighton and Sussex Medical School. We provide resources, advocacy, support services, events, and employment opportunities that contribute to student well-being, academic success, and social engagement. As an independent organisation, we are committed to upholding the values of empowerment, inclusivity, and student-led decision-making.
Position Overview: External Trustee
We are currently seeking experienced and motivated individuals to join us as External Trustees on the USSU Board. As a Trustee, you will play a key role in guiding the strategic direction and governance of USSU, ensuring that our Union operates effectively and sustainably while prioritising the interests of our diverse student body.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic guidance: Collaborate with the elected student officers to establish and uphold the Union’s strategic vision and mission.
- Governance and compliance: Ensure compliance with charity laws, our constitution, and bye-laws while promoting transparency and accountability.
- Financial and operational oversight: Monitor financial health, review budgeting, and risk management practices, and support operational effectiveness.
- Mentorship and empowerment: Act as a mentor for student representatives and trustees, fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for student-led initiatives.
Qualifications:
Ideal candidates will bring expertise in areas such as charity governance, strategic planning, finance, or policy development, along with a commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion. Prior experience on a board is helpful, but a passion for empowering students and creating a positive university experience is essential.
Why Join USSU as an External Trustee?
- Professional Development: Gain valuable experience in governance, strategic planning, and risk management.
- Networking: Connect with a network of dedicated professionals and student leaders.
- Impact: Contribute to an organisation dedicated to improving the lives of students through advocacy, support, and inclusivity.
Commitments:
- Attendance at five trustee board and five subcommittee meetings annually, along with preparatory work.
- Occasional informal meetings with student trustees to provide guidance.
