Asylos is looking for a Treasurer for its Board of Trustees. This is an exciting opportunity to support Asylos’ growth and to shape its work over the years to come. As a trustee, you will be working closely with a passionate team of people from different countries and professional backgrounds.

 

 

 

General duties of all Board members

  • Attend Quarterly Board meetings.

     

    Read papers sent out for discussion prior to Board meetings and prepare to contribute ideas and feedback.

     

    Read and where necessary respond to emails from the Co-Directors and other Board members.

     

    Participate in the work of any sub-committees for which they are members.

     

    Promote the work of Asylos through their own networks and contacts, including to funders.

     

    Offer advice, support and assistance to the Co-Directors on an individual basis (as commitments permit).

     

    Take a proactive and collaborative approach to securing fundraising for Asylos’ activities and in raising the profile of the organisation.

     

    Participate in recruitment of Board members and/or staff via appointed panels.

     

    Undertake training to support all the above as agreed by the Board.

     

    Serve on panels to hear disciplinary or grievance matters.

     

     Contribute to the development of Asylos’ strategic priorities at the end/beginning of strategic cycles.

  • Genuine interest in evidence-based asylum procedures.

     

    Willingness to act as ambassador for Asylos in front of foundations and potential funders not only within the UK, but also elsewhere.

     

    Readiness to work together with the staff team and the rest of the board to create innovative ideas to gain funds.

     

    Curiosity to work with a diverse, transnational network of engaged volunteer researchers.

     

Treasurer duties and role description The Treasurer will advise and support our Co-Directors in leading the financial governance and strategy of Asylos, including in financial forecasting, budget and monitoring financial risk and reporting back to the trustee board on Asylos’ overall financial position and monitoring financial risk. We have external accountants who provide quarterly reports and variance analysis against our budget and who audit our end of year accounts.

 

The responsibilities of this role means that the Treasurer is also a member of the Finance and Fundraising sub-committee of Trustees which meets online between full trustee meetings and when needed.  

 

Specific responsibilities of the Treasurer

 

To support and advice  the co-directors in the governance of Asylos financial management with regard to:

 

  • Ensuring legal requirements for producing, signing and filing annual accounts are met.

     

    Supporting the Co-Directors in reviewing the annual budget and budgets relating to specific fundraising applications (The Treasurer is not expected to maintain accounts or prepare budgets which are tasks undertaken by the Co-Directors and/or external accountants).

     

    Support the Co-Directors to review quarterly variance analysis and report back to the trustee board.

     

    Approve monthly payments, including salaries via online banking.

     

    Working cooperatively with and providing guidance to the Co-Directors and board of trustees on financial management including:

     

    • strategic insight and overview of Asylos’ finances.

       

      regular oversight of risks and of opportunities to enhance Asylos’ financial position.

       

      guidance on evolution of Asylos’ financial controls and systems.

       

      ensuring adherence to the requirements of our funders.

       

      leading Board and Finance Committee discussion on financial matters.
