Gilbert White & The Oates Collections: Finance Trustee
Opportunity for a finance professional with a passion for the natural world.
Who we are
Gilbert White’s House and Gardens is a place of internationally important heritage that preserves the legacy of three great explorers of the natural world. Visitors experience nature close up and our Field Studies Centre helps over 5,000 young people begin journeys of discovery yearly.
Gilbert White has influenced scientists and naturalists from Darwin to Attenborough. His home brings together collections representing his life and work and the pioneering travels of the Oates family in Africa and Antarctica.
Why work with us
A changing climate and biodiversity loss remind us constantly of the importance of public understanding of the environment and preparing future generations to care for it.
What we do
Our Board works with an enthusiastic staff team and around 100 dedicated volunteers, to maintain and develop Gilbert White’s House and Gardens as a centre of excellence. We have recently secured several grants from major donors to support our work and launched an appeal for a ‘Fund for the Future’ to invest in our charitable purpose and ensure a financially sustainable future. Trustees, staff and volunteers work together to create a positive, equal opportunities environment.
What we are looking for
We are seeking a trustee combining professional financial skills with a passion for the natural world (and/or polar exploration or garden history). Previous trustee experience not essential. The Board meets six times a year, virtually or in Selborne, Hampshire. Finance and income generation sub-groups meet online.
Where we are
Living close to Gilbert White’s House is not essential, but being within reasonable travelling distance enables trustees to get to know staff, operations and surroundings and join in year round activities.
