Job Details
Sister System’s mission is to bridge the gap between care-affected girls and mainstream society by working alongside our ‘sisters’ to ensure they have the same opportunities everyone else has whether at home, in school, at work, and within our communities. We provide a pathway to break through the many barriers faced by young women enabling them to fulfil their potential and become socioeconomically mobile.
Sister System is looking for a new Chair to lead our Trustees to continue empowering Sister System's people, purpose and care affected girls and young women. The Chair will provide direction and support as we embark on our new 3-year journey.
What will you be doing?
Sister System is looking for a new Chair to lead our Board of Trustees to continue empowering Sister System's people, purpose and care affected girls and young women. The Chair will provide direction and support as we embark on our new 3-year journey (2024-2026) developed through a detailed process in partnership with our team, Sis-Stars and various stakeholders in our ecosystem including funders and partners.
We are looking for a dynamic, passionate skilled and experienced individual who has the time to commit to this pivotal role, a network to add to Sister Systems existing eco-system of stakeholders and a deep understanding and alignment of the Mission, values and journey that Sister System is on. The right candidate will be ready to make the commitment to join us on our journey towards becoming a Pan London Organisation across the next three years.
The Chair will provide leadership by ensuring that everyone remains focused on the delivery of Sister System’s charitable purposes and ensuring that strategic initiatives align with Sister System’s mission and objectives.
In addition to the general responsibilities of a Trustee, the main duties of the Chair include the following:
- Providing direction to Sister System and the Board by ensuring that everyone remains focused on the delivery of our services to our beneficiaries
- Leading the Board in setting, executing, and reviewing the strategic direction in collaboration with the CEO and Executive Team.
- Chairing and facilitating Board meetings (both online and in-person)
- Overseeing the risk management strategy, ensuring the Board or a designated member is regularly reviewing these risks.
- Working closely with the CEO to identify and mitigate risks.
- Helping create strategic plans
- Checking that decisions taken at meetings are implemented and coordinating any actions taken
- Working closely with the Sister System Director and supporting the operations team
- Bringing impartiality and objectivity to decision-making
Time Commitment: Minimum 12 hours per month: Including quarterly board meetings and regular contact with CEO and Trustees

What difference will you make?
This role presents the right candidate with a unique opportunity to lead a Board and Organisation that has built an alternative system, one that seeks to empower young women who are often on the edges of opportunity unable to access them through the traditional frameworks that often ‘care’ for them. Sister System has demonstrated its impact, made significant progress and changed the lives of 100’s of care affected girls in the 6 years since its founding.
The impact that you will have is a deep meaningful and lasting change to the lives of many young people who currently do not have equitable access to opportunities they are well able to fill. Your leadership will make a difference by facilitating and stimulating well-rounded and strategic decision-making whilst working in partnership with the CEO, Trustees and other senior members of staff to achieve the aims of our organisation. You will support our Board to fulfil its responsibilities for the overall governance and strategic direction of the Charity and take us to the next stage
You will be joining a fast-growing, award-winning organisation led by a multi-disciplinary team. Together, and alongside our Board of Trustees, we fuse our acquired skills with our shared passion to enable, empower and enhance the life opportunities and outcomes for young women affected by care. This makes our approach utterly unique and completely essential, and you will play a significant role in shaping our future. With opportunities to work alongside changemakers across corporate, voluntary, local and central government, and other major stakeholders in the sector, becoming the ambassador and champion to continue to galvanise Sister System’s mission.
Before you apply
Once we receive your expression of interest via the Reach Volunteering Platform, we will be in touch for further information and next steps. The process will normally involve an initial conversation with our CEO or a Trustee and then a formal interview.
Company
Reach is the leading skills-based volunteering charity in the UK. We are the single biggest source of trustees for the voluntary sector in the UK. Connecting people, skills and good causes is our mission and our passion.
What we do
We help charities and other non-profits find the skills they need to thrive. Every year hundreds of charities recruit volunteers through our service. These volunteers share their skills as trustees, advisors or mentors, carrying out short term projects or ongoing operational roles.
Our goal is to create a step change in the quality, range and scale of skills-based volunteering and trusteeship in the UK. We are proud of our growing impact.
Why we do it
Charities can boost their capacity, increase their effectiveness and innovate / find new ways of doing things when volunteers donate their professional skills. Trustees play a crucial role in leading charities and overseeing their work. When the trustee board of a charity has a good mix of skills and professional experience, it can govern more effectively.
By supporting charities to recruit volunteers and trustees with valuable skills, we help charities increase their capacity and strengthen their governance.
How we do it
Our online community inspires people to use their skills for social good. We help organisations to make the most of those skills, to think through their needs and to attract the right person. We believe that communication is important in recruiting trustees and volunteers, so our service encourages dialogue between organisations and individuals. Our service is free to volunteers and to most charities.
